Was punk just another moment in music history? Greil Marcus, author of the renowned |Lipstick Traces,| delves into the after-life of punk as a much richer phenomenon--a form of artistic and social rebellion that continually erupts into popular culture. In more than seventy short pieces written over fifteen years, he traces the uncompromising strands of punk from Johnny Rotten to Elvis Costello, Sonic Youth, even Bruce Springsteen.

|Smollett's Don Quixote first appeared in 1755 and was for many years the most popular English-language version of Cervantes's masterpiece. However, soon after the start of the nineteenth century, its reputation began to suffer. Rival translators, literary hucksters, and careless scholars initiated or fed a variety of charges against Smollett - even plagiarism. For almost 130 years no publisher risked reprinting it.|.

An anthology of exemplary readings by some of the twentieth centuryrs|s foremost literary critics,Close Readingpresents a wide range of responses to the question at the heart of literary criticism: how best to read a text to understand its meaning. The lively introduction and the selected essays provide an overview of close reading from New Criticism through poststructuralism, including works of feminist criticism, postcolonial theory, queer theory, new historicism, and more. From a 1938 essay by John Crowe Ransom through the work of contemporary scholars,Close Readinghighlights the interplay between critics-the ways they respond to and are influenced by othersrs| works. To facilitate comparisons of methodology, the collection includes discussions of the same primary texts by scholars using different critical approaches. The Novel in England, 1900-1950 PDF
By:Robert L. Caserio
Published on 1999 by Twayne Pub

In the first half of the twentieth century, English fiction played a crucial role in the artistic and intellectual movement called modernism. In recent decades, however, modernism and its proponents have come under attack. Today's critics claim that modernist fiction has been socially and politically harmful, and that literary modernism has fortunately been superseded by |post-modernism.|.

An Introduction to the New Testament, Second Edition PDF
By:Charles B. Puskas,C. Michael Robbins
Published on 2011-06-16 by Wipf and Stock Publishers

Studying the New Testament requires a determination to encounter this collection of writings on its own terms. This classic introduction by Charles B. Puskas, revised with C. Michael Robbins, provides helpful guidance. Since the publication of the first edition, which was in print for twenty years, a host of new and diverse cultural, historical, social-scientific, socio-rhetorical, narrative, textual, and contextual studies has been examined. Attentive also to the positive reviews of the first edition, the authors retain the original tripartite arrangement on 1) the world of the New Testament, 2) interpreting the New Testament, and 3) Jesus and early Christianity. This volume supplies readers with pertinent primary and secondary material. The new edition carries on a genuine effort to be nonsectarian, and although it is more of a critical introduction than a general survey, it is recommended to midlevel college and seminary students and to anyone who wants to be better informed about the New Testament.

Australia captured the imagination of European writers in the nineteenth century, and with the beginning of settlement, Australia became the setting for various |lost world| stories. Australia has since developed a rich national literature, and perhaps because of its exotic and ancient nature, the continent has inspired numerous science fiction writers. This book surveys the history of Australian science fiction from its nineteenth century origins to the close of the twentieth century. Included are discussions of Australian writers who have been substantially engaged with science fiction as a genre. The volume proceeds chronologically, with sections devoted to Australian science fiction before 1925, the rise of traditional science fiction from 1926 through 1959, the international recognition of Australian science fiction from 1960 to 1974, and the serious acclaim given to Australian science fiction writers in the last 25 years.

Graphs, Maps, Trees PDF
By:Franco Moretti
Published on 2005 by Verso

Professor Franco Moretti argues heretically that literature scholars should stop reading books and start counting, graphing, and mapping them instead. He insists that such a move could bring new luster to a tired field, one that in some respects is among |the most backwards disciplines in the academy.| Literary study, he argues, has been random and unsystematic. For any given period scholars focus on a select group of a mere few hundred texts: the canon. As a result, they have allowed a narrow distorting slice of history to pass for the total picture. Moretti offers bar charts, maps, and time lines instead, developing the idea of |distant reading,| set forth in his path-breaking essay |Conjectures on World Literature,| into a full-blown experiment in literary historiography, where the canon disappears into the larger literary system. Charting entire genres—the epistolary, the gothic, and the historical novel—as well as the literary output of countries such as Japan, Italy, Spain, and Nigeria, he shows how literary history looks significantly different from what is commonly supposed and how the concept of aesthetic form can be radically redefined.

By:György Lukács
Published on 1962 by U of Nebraska Press

Georg Lukács (1885–1971) is now recognized as one of the most innovative and best-informed literary critics of the twentieth century. Trained in the German philosophic tradition of Kant, Hegel, and Marx, he escaped Nazi persecution by fleeing to the Soviet Union in 1933. There he faced a new set of problems: Stalinist dogmatism about literature and literary criticism. Maneuvering between the obstacles of censorship, he wrote and published his longest work of literary criticism, The Historical Novel, in 1937. Beginning with the novels of Sir Walter Scott, The Historical Novel documents the evolution of a genre that came to dominate European fiction in the years after Napoleon. The novel had reached a point at which it could be socially and politically critical as well as psychologically insightful. Lukács devotes his final chapter to the anti-Nazi fiction of Germany and Austria.

Negotiating Temporal Differences PDF
By:Wilfried Raussert
Published on 2000 by Universitaetsverlag Winter

Exploring the temporal dimension of African American music in its development from early forms of blues and jazz to the free and fast-paced sequences of jazz musicians such as John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman, this volume addresses music as a key metaphor for the analysis of time in African American culture. Two narrative strategies emerge from tracing the impact of musical time on narrativity in an intercultural sphere - novels by Langston Hughes, Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, Ismael Reed, and Ntozake Shange representing the textual basis for critical analysis. First, the excursions into the field of music illustrate blues' and jazz's pivotal role in shaping and redefining a particular African American sense of time from the Harlem Renaissance to the contemporary period. Second, the exploration of the writers' historical imagination unfolds a story about alternating concepts of history and culture, as they emerge from the impact of musical time on the novelistic discourse. This volume will be of interest to scholars of literature, music, and cultural studies.

If Rhythm Science was about the flow of things, Sound Unbound is about the remix -- how music, art, and literature have blurred the lines between what an artist can do and what a composer can create. In Sound Unbound, Rhythm Science author Paul Miller aka DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid asks artists to describe their work and compositional strategies in their own words. These are reports from the front lines on the role of sound and digital media in an information-based society. The topics are as diverse as the contributors: composer Steve Reich offers a memoir of his life with technology, from tape loops to video opera; Miller himself considers sampling and civilization; novelist Jonathan Lethem writes about appropriation and plagiarism; science fiction writer Bruce Sterling looks at dead media; Ron Eglash examines racial signifiers in electrical engineering; media activist Naeem Mohaiemen explores the influence of Islam on hip hop; rapper Chuck D contributes |Three Pieces|; musician Brian Eno explores the sound and history of bells; Hans Ulrich Obrist and Philippe Parreno interview composer-conductor Pierre Boulez; and much more. |Press 'play,'| Miller writes, |and this anthology says 'here goes.'| The groundbreaking music that accompanies the book features Nam Jun Paik, the Dada Movement, John Cage, Sonic Youth, and many other examples of avant-garde music. Most of this content comes from the archives of Sub Rosa, a legendary record label that has been the benchmark for archival sounds since the beginnings of electronic music. Foul & Fair Play PDF
By:Marty Roth
Published on 1995-01 by University of Georgia Press

Foul and Fair Play is an examination of classic detective fiction as a genre--an attempt to read a wide variety of texts by different authors as variations on a common and relatively tight set of conventions. Marty Roth covers the period from the |prehistory| of detective fiction in Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Robert Louis Stevenson, and H. G. Wells up to the 1960s, which marked the end, he says, of the classical period--|the end of an extremely conservative paradigm.| The detective fiction genre, as Roth defines it, includes analytic detective fiction, hard-boiled detective fiction, and the spy thriller. Roth insists on the structural common ground of these three types of writing and places them in the larger system of mystery fiction that preceded and surrounds them. The first part of the book consists of a reading of conventions: conventions of character (the detective, the criminal), of gender and sexuality, of narrative style, of settings, and of the curious rules of exchange and coincidence that operate in the realm where detective stories take place. The second section deals with the convoluted epistemology of mystery and detective fiction, depending as it does on other major intellectual developments of the late nineteenth century, such as psychoanalysis. An extremely original study, Foul and Fair Play offers many insights into the literary and cultural history of a popular genre.
